Johnnie To tribute at La Cinémathèque française in Paris

The French film institute, La Cinémathèque Française in Paris, presented a tribute to Hong Kong director Johnnie To (The Mission, Breaking News, Election 1 and 2, Exiled…) from 5 March to 14 April 2008.

An avant-premiere of his psychological police thriller Mad Detective was screened on 4 March before going on general release.  The film director also gave a masterclass at the Cinémathèque on 5 March, after a screening of his film The Mission.

Speaking at the avant-première of Mad Detective, Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Communities, Duncan Pescod, said that Hong Kong is more than an international hub for trade and finance – it also has a wealth of creative talent.

Hong Kong directors, producers and actors have become household names around the world and their films are well-represented at international festivals. Hong Kong's film industry has remained vigorous over the last decade, with freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Basic Law. Mr Pescod noted that despite competition from DVDs, box office receipts in Hong Kong were up 11% last year, boosted by the opening of several new cinemas.
