One of Antwerp's major celebrating events for Chinese New Year, the colourful "Legends of Lion Dance" exhibition showcases traditional Hong Kong crafts and cultural heritage.
It is being held for the fourth successive year at the initiative of Asian Events Tofoe, a non-profit-making organisation established by Hong Kong second-generation community members in Antwerp, to promote Hong Kong's cultural heritage and traditional crafts in Belgium.
With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels (HKETO, Brussels) and the Belgium-Hong Kong Society, Asian Events Tofoe is presenting around 15 unique lion heads made and embroidered in Hong Kong. Visitors can learn about how lion heads are made, the meaning of the lion dance and Chinese New Year traditions. Live lion dances are included in the programme, and guided tours, in particular for schools, are provided. The event also ties in with Antwerp's Chinese New Year Festival to be held on De Conickplein in the afternoon on 25 January 2020.
The "Legends of Lion Dance" exhibition will be held from 10 January to 2 February 2020 at Antwerp's main public library, the Bibliotheek Permeke at 26 De Coninckplein, not far from Antwerp's Central Station. It is open seven days a week. Entry is free of charge. For more information about the exhibition and three weeks of other events organised in Antwerp on the occasion of Chinese New Year, please see Permeke's website and the website of the City of Antwerp.
