HKETO, Brussels hosts Chinese New Year receptions

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels hosted its annual Chinese New Year receptions in Istanbul, Paris, Brussels, Dublin, The Hague and Milan in January and February 2020 to mark the start of the Year of the Rat.

Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union, Mr Eddie Cheung, said his thoughts were with the patients suffering from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and he wished them a speedy recovery.  He was grateful for the dedication of front-line medical staff who were treating the patients.

Mr Cheung said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government is implementing a comprehensive and co-ordinated approach to contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of the community, while maintaining Hong Kong's position as an international city and aviation hub.

All but two of Hong Kong's land boundary points with Mainland China have been closed to reduce the flow of people in both directions.  Health monitoring resources have been concentrated on the remaining entry points, at Shenzhen Bay, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Hong Kong International Airport. The number of flights between Hong Kong and China has been drastically reduced and from 8 February 2020, all persons arriving from the Mainland are subject to a mandatory, 14-day quarantine.  Classes at all Hong Kong schools have been suspended until 16 March 2020 at the earliest.  Employers have been urged to make flexible work arrangements for their staff.*

Mr Cheung said he was confident the measures put in place by the authorities in Hong Kong, in Mainland China and other countries would bring the epidemic under control.  Hong Kong is extremely resilient and has shown its ability to overcome crises in the past.  It would emerge stronger as a financial, trading, tourism and cultural hub in Asia.
