Sparrow (文雀)

Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To takes the role of the playful entertainer once more with the director kicking up his feet between tense thrillers to craft a breezy hometown crime caper. Set to a perky exotica soundtrack, a team of dapper pickpockets and a mystery woman on the run flit about the city in a cat-and-mouse games and battles of wits. Compact, comic and always eager to charm its audience, Sparrow's urban playtime comes both with deliberate touches of local character to play up its downtown surrounding and subtle infusions of classic European cinema style.

The Assassin (聶隱娘)

Based on a classic novella by Pei Xing, the Taiwan-China-Hong Kong production The Assassin tells the tale of Nie Yinniang, a black-clad assassin who dispatches corrupt officials at the behest of Taoist nun Jiaxin. In the prologue, Yinniang decides not to kill one of her targets because he has a son. Noting this, Jiaxin next asks Yinniang to kill her own cousin, regional governor Tian Ji'an, who was once promised to be Yinniang's husband. The marriage was arranged during childhood, but Yinniang was soon shuttled off to Jiaxin's care thus breaking the engagement. An escort mission puts Yinniang's father, General Nie Feng in danger, while Tian Ji'an's favored concubine Huji is rumored to be pregnant. The latter news does not sit well with Tian Ji'an's wife, Lady Tian.

Dragon Blade (天降雄獅)

The historical action epic Dragon Blade by HK filmmaker Daniel Lee takes place during the Han Dynasty. The story centers on the commander of the Protection Squad of the Western Regions (Jackie Chan), who joins forces with Roman general Lucius (John Cusack) to protect China's sovereignty as power-crazed Tiberius (Adrien Brody) seeks to defeat Lucius once and for all.
